This is my conceptual unit on modernism that I am uploading for my ENG 311 class. This unit is intended to be taught to a 12th grade advanced placement class. I have found that modernism is one of the most challenging things that face college lit students and therefore, I wanted to give my future college bound students an introduction to this style of literature. Feel free to use any parts of this unit as you see fit and let me know if you found any part of it useful.

Thanks,

Steve Annese

My name is Maria Pohl.  I will be graduating from Central Michigan University in May of 2012.  I am currently taking ENG 311 (Literature for Adolescents) at GVSU.

My conceptual unit is based on the novel, Great Gatsby.  The students will participate in activities and different projects that will highlight different aspects of the novel.  Many of the projects will spark a need for creativity and intellectual thinking.  Many of the lessons are assessment based, however classroom discussions will be occur on a regular basis to ensure student understanding.

I also find it important to provide students with a way to contact me and ask questions regularly.  They will be encouraged to ask questions throughout the unit, however, if they do not wish to during class there will be a Question Drop Box on my desk where they can write down questions to be answered the next class period.  Also, I will provide the students with surveys at the end of the unit to gain their feedback so I can improve the unit if used in the future.

Hope this is helpful, and good luck!

Maria

Hello All!

My name is Audra Fantin and I am currently studying at Grand Valley State to become an English Teacher of Secondary Education. Attached is a conceptual unit plan I have created on the social justice of feminism. In this unit you will find 10 full lessons including feminist writers such as Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Kate Chopin, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The unit is centered around students grasping the concept of feminism and how it has changed and developed throughout the 20th century and into the present.

Also, this unit includes the young adult book The Hunger Games as a pairing to go along with the unit. Students will have literature circle groups where they discuss The Hunger Games and how it relates to what we have been discussing in class. There are multiple activities attached, as well the incorporation of technology usage in the lessons of videos, a class website, and having students create their own website. Many of the materials and literature are found online for free.

In this attachment you will find a document containing all the lessons, a calender, assessment sheets/ an example of a poetry assignment titled "Clocks," online materials with URL links, a general lesson outline, and finally my introduction to the unit as an explanation of why and how I set up my unit the way I did.

Hope you enjoy and can use this unit in your own classroom!

Of Mice and Men Conceptual Unit for ENG 311

Hello, my name is Matt Golzynski and I am a student in Dr. Rozema's ENG 311 class.  My conceptual unit on Of Mice and Men will go through the story and highlight some of the major themes of the work on friendship, power, imagery, and symbolism.  I have also included a lesson on re-writing the ending of the story that the students will do as a  dramatic performance.

Attached is my conceptual unit on Social Justice. I feel that this will be a very meaningful unit for students, as America is an increasingly diverse and multicultural place. Furthermore, many students have grown up unaware of many of the social justice issues present in society, and this unit will open their eyes to some complex and difficult issues. I have constructed this unit from a Reader Response standpoint in an attempt to make the unit more meaningful and relevant to students.

Hello English Teachers!

My name is Beccah Rathaus and I am attending school at Grand Valley State University.  For my Teaching Literature to Adolescents class, I came up with a conceptual unit plan to discuss the second portion of Sir Thomas More's Utopia.  I struggled with this book and high school and chose it for this project to try and use the Reader Response Theory to develop my lessons.  Using drama, discussion, and visual art, students will learn the concept of utopia while creating their own perfect world.  I also chose to use literature circles in this unit to have students discuss a dystopian novel.  Students will be active learners during this classroom, making the book their own experience!  I hope you enjoy it and I am totally open to feedback!

My name is Abby Greulich and I am currently enrolled in ENG 311.

This is my conceptual unit that deals with literary texts on WWII.  The main text I use is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and I include other short stories, quotes, and various texts students will respond to.  I am using the unit as a way to gain a better understanding on what was happening in WWII, and help students to improve their reading comprehension, and writing.

Thanks,

Abby

As part of my conceptual unit for Rozema's ENG 311 class that is intended for a sophomore class.  I choose to work with poetry because it is what frightens me the most about teaching in a classroom.  I brought in authors such as Maya Angelou, Stephan Crane, Robert William Service and T. S. Elliot.  My goal for this unit was to first help students get over their fear of poetry but also to help bring them an understanding of poetry to the classroom.

Hi Casey,

I tried to access your 3-D environment, but had no success. This sounds super innovative! Can you share with me how to access it? Thanks!

Hello,

My name is Bill Treat.   Attached is a unit plan for Robert Rozema's ENG310 course Teaching Writing at Grand Valley State University.   I hook students into a multi-genre project using visual analogies of Leonardo Da Vinci and modern kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen, both of whom created beautiful objects out of many detailed parts.  The topic of student's projects is an autobiography.  Hope you enjoy it.

Hello,

My name is Emily Gunsch and I am uploading my pedagogy project for studying Inferno by Dante Alighieri.  In this unit plan, you will find activities, projects and lesson plans to aid in your teaching of this epic poem.  Hopefully you will find that this unit helps challenge your students' way of thinking and challenges their notions of morality in a critical and educational way.

Enjoy!!

Hello,

My name is Bill Treat, a student in Robert Rozema's ENG 311 course Teaching Literature at GVSU.  I've attached a unit plan on teaching comedy with Tweflth Night as my anchor text.  With the exception of Twain, comedy rarely finds its way into the high school literature canon, and almost never in Young Adult.  Because I find humor a valuable coping skill in an often complex and polarized society, I decided to offer it to others who might want to pass it on.   Thanks for reading it and for your comments.

Bill
