This unit plan is centered around the idea of the American dream and how it is often not a reality for many people today, especially for people of color. This unit should be taught from the social justice perspective because its central theme is around social inequality and how to change it. This unit has a strong emphasis on writing and project work. Students complete a Podcast, and write what I have named a "social justice letter", which is basically a letter of encouragement to a person, group, or organization that promotes the American dream for all. Some authors used in this unit plan are Dick Gregory, Maya Angelou, Sandra Cisneros.  This unit would be appropriate for a ninth or tenth grade American literature course.
