Books, Movies, and Students' Expectations and Standards of Excellence

I have noticed lately that students in my college classes seem to have different expectations and standards of excellence for books than for movies. What might be a fun and entertaining way to spend a couple of hours at the movies doesn't necessarily translate into a great read. Recently, my students read The Lovely Bones (Alice Sebold) in class. Each student who had seen the movie (which we did not view as a class) seemed disappointed with the film's changes to the…

Students will join the Michigan Council of Teachers of English, interview local English teachers about professional development, and host meetings with local teens to discuss teaching as a profession. So…

Zombieland in the Classroom

In the course of helping with the Writing Improvement (WI) class yesterday, the English teacher and I had a brainstorm: Zombieland!

We teach in an alternative high school, so our students are more than usually against the idea of writing anything at all, even in a writing class. We have been following Baron Wormser's and David Cappella's Poetry-Centered Classroom approach in the WI class this year, having had to re-write the entire curriculum last summer, and while…

Writing Project participation

This past school year was horrendous. Then I was extended an invitation to participate in the Chippewa River Writing Project Summer Institute. At a Spring Showcase, I spoke with a former college professor and mentor. Explaining that I felt on the verge of teacher burnout (after only 10 years!), she encouraged me by saying, "This is just what you need!" She was right -- this wonderful opportunity for professional development renewed my dedication and refreshed my spirit.

If…

Retirement Confusion

Could someone please help me understand this legislation. It seems that new teachers have a chance at getting jobs but that senior teachers are getting pushed out and blamed for fund imbalances.

new novel Rikers High

I wanted you to know that in Feb. Viking will publish my new YA novel Rikers High. The novel is based on the real-life stories of several students with whom I worked during my six years of teaching incarcerated teens to read and write on Rikers Island, the world’s largest jail. I believe that it is, by far, my best and most important work, revealing what really happens to teens who get caught up in our criminal justice system and experience high school behind bars. The overwhelming number of… Continue

Fighting Back

Everyone needs to know that there is a groundswell movement on the part of parents and teachers to stand on the steps of the capitol building in Lansing on December 3 and forcefully tell our legislators that they need to stop eviscerating education. There are other ways to balance the budget. Children should not be used as political pawns. If you can go to Lansing on December 3, please do. The more voters who are there, the better. Check with your friends, neighbors, parents, EVERYBODY and… Continue

2009 Affiliate Developing Leaders Award

I have been selected as this year's award winner. I'd like to send a very special THANK YOU to all the seasoned, tenured, and veteran instructors & professors in MCTE who continue to inspire, guide, and mentor young teachers, like myself, to be better people and teachers for our students. In this new era of learning, we (young, aspiring teachers) are encouraged and find the motivation within ourselves to be "better" by the examples you all set. To all the mentors associated with "Teachers… Continue
