I have noticed lately that students in my college classes seem to have different expectations and standards of excellence for books than for movies. What might be a fun and entertaining way to spend a couple of hours at the movies doesn't necessarily translate into a great read. Recently, my students read The Lovely Bones (Alice Sebold) in class. Each student who had seen the movie (which we did not view as a class) seemed disappointed with the film's changes to the…Continue

This past school year was horrendous. Then I was extended an invitation to participate in the Chippewa River Writing Project Summer Institute. At a Spring Showcase, I spoke with a former college professor and mentor. Explaining that I felt on the verge of teacher burnout (after only 10 years!), she encouraged me by saying, "This is just what you need!" She was right -- this wonderful opportunity for professional development renewed my dedication and refreshed my spirit.
